The AFL and CIO merged together to make a super giant union!. They gained influence as a result!. But it also gave rise to corruption within the unions!.

But labor unions suffered because of legislation from a Republican Congress, called the Taft-Harley act which made it illegal for stores to require people to join unions (called closed-shops) and had some restrictions on picketing and strikes!. It also allowed for a presidential "cooling period" if a strike should occur, whatever that means!. the Taft-Hartley act was enacted in 1947, vetoed by President Truman, but overrode by Congress!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
