In the West, the Roman Empire was declining and falling!. The last Western Emperor, Romulus Augustulus, abdicated at the age of 16 in 476, and retired to the Gulf of Naples with a pension!. The Roman armies by this time were dominated by German mercenaries!. After the abdiction of Romulus Augustulus, Odacer, leader of the German mercenaries, became King of Italy!. Gaul was already in the hands of Franks, Burgundians and Visigoths!. Visigoths and Sueves divided Spain between them, the Vandals controlled North Africa, and Roman Britain was well en route to becming Anglo-Saxon England!. The empire of rome in the west survived only as a memory!.

Romulus Augustulus was the last in the unbroken line of emperors who ruled Rome!. This only became clear with the passage of time, when no further emperors were appointed in the West to serve as figureheads for Germanic army chiefs!. In the east, indeed, emperors today known as Byzantine, continued to rule until the fall of Consantinople in 1453!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
