Question: History lovers, this is for you!!?
what led the south to secede from the Union in 1860 and 1861!? abraham lincoln!.!.what else!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Lincoln winning the election caused SC to secede (it was the first state to do so)!. Several states in the Deep South followed suit, but the "Upper South" did not!. This all occurred after Lincoln's election, but before his inauguration!. After he assumed the presidency, the Confederacy, or what was of it, took over "Fort Sumter" - Lincoln announced that this was belligerence, and sent soldiers to reclaim the fort!. This caused the secession of the upper south states!. However, certain states did not secede (in part because Lincoln threatened them, and suspended habeas corpus)!.

Keep in mind that slavery was the fuel of secession, but the Civil War was caused by secession, not slavery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ah - yes - "gatiota-6" raises the olde "War of Northern Aggression" argument!.

When is the South going to realize that they were basically on the wrong side of history!? He does admit that one or more of the causes was slavery!. But other arguments also were the result of the slavery dispute!. For example, the argument over control of new western states was really about whether those states would be free or slave states!. (Missouri Compromise)

At the time of the Civil War most other countries had long before abolished slavery, including England, France, and Mexico!. Actually, the real story about the Alamo and all those "bad" Mexicans is that the Americans who were settling in Texas (a legitimate territory of Mexico) in the early 1800s wanted to continue their slave holding practices, which was illegal in Mexico!. So all those great martyrs (David Crockett, Jim Bowie, etc!.) who died at the Alamo were fighting to preserve their right to own slaves!.

So, sorry - can't rewrite history!. The South was trying to preserve an immoral system (justified by self-serving misreadings of the Bible), started a war (by attacking and capturing a Federal fort), and got their butts whipped!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Historians have long debated the causes of the war and the Southern perspective differs greatly from the Northern perspective!. Based upon the study of original documents of the War Between The States (Civil War) era and facts and information published by Confederate Veterans, Confederate Chaplains, Southern writers and Southern Historians before, during, and after the war, I present the facts, opinions, and conclusions stated in the following article!.

Technically the 10 causes listed are reasons for Southern secession!. The only cause of the war was that the South was invaded and responded to Northern aggression!.

1!. TARIFFS
2!. CENTRALIZATION VERSUS STATES RIGHTS
3!. CHRISTIANITY VERSUS SECULAR HUMANISM
4!. CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
5!. CONTROL OF WESTERN TERRITORIES
6!. NORTHERN INDUSTRIALISTS WANTED THE SOUTH'S RESOURCES
7!. SLANDER OF THE SOUTH BY NORTHERN NEWSPAPERS
8!. NEW ENGLANDERS ATTEMPTED TO INSTIGATE MASSIVE SLAVE REBELLIONS IN THE SOUTH!.
9!. SLAVERY!. Indirectly, slavery was a cause of the war!.
10!. NORTHERN AGGRESSION AGAINST SOUTHERN STATES
