Absurd but true!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Janissaries were in the Ottoman army that were born to Christians living in the Ottoman empire, were selected at birth- and converted to Islam (in this fashion, there could be no hereditary soldier class, since their children would be Muslim and ineligible to join)!. They were originally formed as the Ottoman's standing army, and their role was quite similar to the Roman Praetorian guards (meaning they guarded the ruler & helped keep peace in the capitol)!.

In the respect that they were trained nearly from birth, they were quite similar to the Spartiates, the legendary soldier class of Sparta!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Janissaries comprised infantry units that formed the Ottoman sultan's household troops and bodyguard!. The force originated in the 14th century; it was abolished by Sultan Mahmud II in 1826 in The Auspicious Incident!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
