Question: What forced Mussolini to resign as Italy's leader in wwll!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
He was forced to step down in 1943 because Italy the war was going badly for Italy!. The allies had won in North Africa, had invaded Sicily, and were starting heavy bombing of Italy itself!. He was imprisoned but the Germans sent in a special forces raid that got him out!.

Mussolini was killed, but not until 1945, two years after he had been forced to step down!.

allenbmeangene, this should clear up your confusion!.
"The growing tension forced Il Duce to summon the Grand Council of Fascism on July 24!. When he announced that the Germans were thinking of evacuating the south, Grandi launched a blistering attack on him!.[49] Grandi moved a resolution asking the king to resume his full constitutional powers, a vote of no confidence in Mussolini, with the motion carrying by a 19-7 margin!. Allegedly Mussolini did not think the vote would have any substantive effect and turned up for work the next day as usual where he was called to the palace of king Victor Emmanuel III, who had been planning to oust Mussolini earlier!. The king formally removed him from office and after leaving the palace, Mussolini was arrested on the king's orders!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

He DID NOT resign, unless, as previously stated, a lynch mob and a noose (and public display of upside down corpses) is considered "resignation!."

If you want to call what Mussolini did at the end a "Resignation," I'd liken it to selling a car you don't own!.
He had nothing to resign FROM!. He's the only one who thought he did (or at least I THOUGHT he was the only one who thought so!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Allies had invaded Italy, the Germans were retreating north, and Italy was beset with political instability!. The Italians were never as fanatic in their loyalty to M as the Germans were to Hitler!.
The Allies were trying to cut a deal with a potential successor!. Essentially the war was lost and the Italians wanted peace!. M resigned, then came back briefly if powerlessly, then was killed by his own people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
