nice pic!. anyway, damn i got distracted!. in 1939, the u!.s!. did not have the bomb nor were we even working on one!. it wasn't until fermi discovered the chain reaction in 1942 did we foster the idea that it could be used for a bomb of immense proportions!. also, even as late as 1944, we didn't have the bases that were close enough to bomb japan!. we had bases in china but they had to fly a murderous route over enemy held territory that was teaming with fighters!. also, the first workable device wasn't built until 1945!. when roosevelt died, truman was made aware of the top secret project and he said that he felt like a bail of hay just fell on him!. he was totally unaware that we were even working on it!. the first successful test was in july of 1945, a few months after roosevelts death!. it was only after we captured the marianas in 1944, did we now possess airfields that were in bomber range of japan!. then after all that, we had to refit our biggest bomber, the b-29, to even carry the bomb in the first place!. most of this happened after roosevelt's death when truman had been in office for only two months!. that is why we had to wait!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As others have said we didn't wait!. However, the Trinity test was on July 16th, 1945 (not the 6th) in New Mexico!. They then dropped the bombs on Japan only a month later!. The Trinity test site is now a National Historic Landmark!.

Truman did not wait - - - the bomb was still being crafted and tested and was used as soon as scientists deemed it ready!.
