The forgotten Patriot - - - John Adams, are you aware that a majority of people instantly think that Thomas Jefferson was a major Player in the Revolution when the extent of his efforts was to serve as war time Governor of Virginia and to write the Declaration of Independence and that he wrote that document with the help of Benjamin Franklin and John Adams!. Almost no one imagines John Adams had much if anything to do with the Revolution when in truth Adams was actively involved years before, during and after!. Adams defended the British soldiers accussed of the Boston Massacre on what later became known as 'American Principals,' that everyone deserves legal councel and a fair trial!. Adams who was accused by Jefferson and cronies of being an aristocratic fop was in truth a Democratic Farmer whose favorite activity was working the fields of his farm and especially harvesting hay!. As a revolutionary trained trial lawyer Adams assembled the legal arguments that bolstered America's claims to Revolution, provinding a legal solution for the complex problems facing the revolutionaries!. It was Adams who saw the need for unity among the colonies and proposed that Virginian George Washington should become Commander in Chief of the Colonial Army, and that Virgiinian Thomas Jefferson should write the Declaration of Independece!. A bit more about that document; Adams had the arguments but was aware that Jefferson was a smoother writer, could be more concise less wordy, which was why Adams proposed that Jefferson write the Declaration!. As a member of the Continental Congress Adams was in the thick of major debates lending the weight f his legal arguments again and again and then when by all rights Adams ought to have taken a break, he risked a dangerous sea voyage to France where he served as an ambassador, along with Franklin and others, and Adams was crucial in obtaining loans from Holland and in getting the French to increase their support for the American Cause!.
Adams was a tireless advocate for America who endured numerous hardships though admittedly he did get the perk of many an adventure including being posted to England, the very same England that had once placed a high price on Adams head, serving as ambassador and negociating favorable terms for an end to the American Revolution!.
And what did Adams get for his considerable efforts!. Squat!. A single term as President, hounded from office by Jefferson whose cronies wrote scurrilious articles denouncing Adams as a Monarchist who wished to return America to British Rule or maybe establish a Monarchy in America with himself as King and his gifted son as Prince!. Adams who disdained credit was insulted for his plump body and bald head and called just about every nasty name there was at the time!. Yet Adams retained a wry sence of humor and continued to make poignant observations which were preserved and served future historians!. And for all of Adams efforts his name but especially his efforts are largely unknown to Americans, Americans who are certain that the only two founding fathers that mattered were Washington and Jefferson!.
