Question: Why was the fear of communism real in australia in the 1960's!?!?!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Some alarmists took the position that the communist bloc was expanding southward through Indo China, and used this fear to involve Australia in the Viet Nam war!. However, while the fear was generated it was not justified!. Just as the red scares of the 1920s and the 1950s in the United Staes were used to whip support up for extremist politicians the Australian red scare of the 1960s ignored the simple truth that neither Australian nor Americans were in the least tempted to become Communists!.

It was never going to happen, but if shameless opportunists like Joseph McCarthy could convince enough fools that it could then they could ride the gravy train!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
