Originally (in early medieval times), a title gave you the right to own land (that's why we still talk about titles when discussing property ownership), tax farmers that live on it, and have a private army to get it all done!. A title could be inherited or given to a person of modest birth by a king or queen in reward for service (mostly military, although there were titles given for civil service as well)!. A nobleman owed allegiance to his lord, who, in turn, owed allegiance to his lord!. In practice, this usually worked as a three-tier system; kings had the allegiance of dukes and counts, who in turn had the allegiance of barons!. So when a king wanted to go to war, he called upon his vassals (dukes and counts) to provide soldiers, weapons, and supplies, who in turn called upon their vassals (barons) to do the same!. Eventually, though, titles became largely ceremonial; the Duke of Normandy no longer owned Normandy or collected taxes from it!.
