Star Wars defence system, at least in part!. I don't think it was ever intended to work, but the possibility made the USSR spend more on defence than their economy could afford!. The economic collapse led to political collapse!.

The Soviet policy of Glasnost also let the Soviet people realise how far behind their standard of living was!. A similar thing is probably under way in China now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
