Everyone so far is correct including you and your g-ma!. Slavery was the driving factor (read super important), without out it there would have been no war!. However, many other factors set up our nation to go to war!. The support for this is that at the time, very few people actually cared about slavery!. Most southerners were small farmers that could never own slaves!. Most Northerners had never even seen a slave!.

The South's economy was dependant on cotton and slavery, and without slavery, their economy would collapse!. Hence abolition would have put the whole area into recession!. Remember that slavery was both a moral as well as economic fight at that time!. also a great deal of economic disparity existed between industrial North and agricultural South!. (read: money)

Now, the South believed lastly that they had joined the Union of their own free will, they maintained the right to leave of their own free will!. Hence, the civil war was also a fight over the rights of state vs!. federal!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes it was money, as money is usually the cause of most wars!. The Northern factory owners were pushing for higher trade tariffs, and dumping their expensive goods on the South!. The South had built a trade relationship with Europe where cotton, tobacco, lumber, and other items where in high demand!. In turn, the South imported manufactured goods from Europe but had to pay extra for them!. The South's economy of course was built on slave labor, but (this was the age of Lazzie-fair and before the labor movement) the North's economy was built on low wage earners!. So low, that it wasn't far removed from slavery itself!. The tariff was the main source of revenue for the Federal government at that time!. Southern port cities of New Orleans, Charleston and Savanna, accounted for 3/4 of the total federal revenue!. Because the North had a majority in Congress, they would appropriate the lion's share of the tax money for projects in the North; mostly infrastructure improvements such as railroads and canals!. The South felt this was unfair taxation and that spending money on local pork barrel projects like this was unconstitutional!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You are both wrong! It was fought over States Rights!. The southern states wanted to have power over the Federal Government!. The Federal Government said 'No"!. So, the southern states left the Union and formed their own Government based on the states having the bigger power on what they want to do!. Not what the Federal Government wants to do!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It WAS slavery!. The south seceeded because of slavery and tried to justify it by saying an infringement of states' rights!. And if you say because of increases tariffs on imported goods, ask yourself why the tariffs were put into place!.!.!.!.!.slavery is why!.

I thought about this alot because i wanted it to be more than slavery but all the issues lead back to the root of the cause which was slavery!.

To the guy below me!. Why did they want states rights!?
Because they believed that the states had the right to choose to be free or slave states but the federal government wanted to make the decision!.
States rights was part of it but it led straight back to slavery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was secession - Lincoln was ready to keep slavery if it meant preserving the Union!. But when the South seceded, the Union declared war on the Confederacy!. Although slavery was a driving issue, it is NOT the reason for why the Civil War was fought (and neither is $)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

even the states rights issue goes back to slavery though, the states wanted the right to own slaves and the fed!. gov't said no, cause economically the north was starting to have trouble competing against slave laborWww@QuestionHome@Com

It was a mixture!. It was more an act of rebellion and authority then anything!. Another reason is the Continental Railroad, even though the South did make the deal for it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

some combination of slavery and states rights, depending on who you ask!.!.!.!.but definately not money, the war did not do great things for either sides economyWww@QuestionHome@Com
