Sardar Vallab-bhai Patel!. Mahatma Gandhi called him Sardar because of his leadership in a struggle by peasants in Bardolai village!. He was the strong man of the Congress Party during the struggle for Independence!. He was inflexible in his convictions, firm in his action, and a strict disciplinarian in the Party!. Hence he was known as the "Iron Man"!. His greatest contribution to History after Independence was that he coaxed, coerced and forced the hundreds upon hundreds of Rajas, Nawabs, Princes, and other chieftains created and supported by the British Raj, into submission, merging their principalities into the Indian Union!.
