i am an indian so i want to answer this question!. first of all when i went through the previous answers, i found some wrong infirmations!. Killing or eating of cow is not at all punished by death in india!. Hindus believe that cow is sacred, so hindus were not eating cow, but now the story is different!. i know so many hindus who eat beef and still believe in hinduism!. All hindus are not veggies!. In Hindu religion a group comprises of very less percentage of population is only vegetarians!. Others eat fish or mutton or chicken or eggs or whatever!. And let me tell u, in some (may be one or two) states of India, killing of cow is prohibited and it can be punishable by law, but believe me, never punishable by death, still eating is not punishable!. Normally meat is prepared outside the state and it is packed and suppllied to such states!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In Hinduism, the cow is considered to be sacred!. I'm not sure if punishment would go so far as death, but I'm pretty sure that few Hindu Indians would even dream of eating beef!.
India is supposed to be a secular country, meaning that there should be a separation of church and state!. Religion isn't supposed to affect the government, but who knows!? I wouldn't be surprised if killing a cow IS against the law!. It would probably be the equivalent of animal abuse in the US!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i dont know if its punishable by law, but i have a ton of indian friends, some who are hindu and muslim!. Hindu's are vegiterians and, therefore, consider the cow sacred because killing it is against their religion!. however, muslims are not vegeiterians and they do kill cows!. As a way of harassment, muslims will tour cows through hindu towns and slaughter them!. i have seen this first hand, its pretty pathetic if you ask me!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, your father is right!. Indian cows are revered by the Hindu religion and honored!. In some Indian provinces, you could be punished and jailed for cow slaughter!.
A few years back, McDonald's in India told everyone that the french fries were fried in vegetable oil, but they were really fried in beef lard!. When the truth came out, there was a big lawsuit - and Micky Dees lost!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
