Actually one quite "civilized" aspect of Scandinavian life that the Vikings carried to other lands was the idea of the "Al-thing"!.The alt-hing was a periodic (mostly yearly) gathering of the freemen of all means in an area!. It was a combination legislative body and court!.Common business such as defense and tax gathering were discussed and voted on!.Estates of deceased land owners were resolved, law suits were settled , couples stated their intention of wedlock and troublesome people were identified to be exiled!.The Al-thing might go on for days at a gathering place and be a sort of reunion party for far flung friends and relatives!.
The legislative body of Iceland is called Al-thing
