Question: What Roman legion was present in Northern Britain!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
It depends on the time period!. For many years after the invasion of 43 AD the Romans had no forces in the north By 68 AD the legion IX Hispana was based at York (Eboracum) and this was the most northerly unit!.

The Ninth legion was replaced under Hadrian (around 122 AD) by the Sixth!.

Gradually the frontier moved further and further north, eventually extending well into the Scottish glens; the legionary fortress at Inchtuthil of around 86 AD is perhaps the most northerly base (intended either for legion II Adiutrix or XX Valeria Victrix) but was barely finished when the unit was posted to Dacia!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My source lists
Leg VI Victrix was based in Eboracum (York)
Leg IX Hispana too!.

Two other legions are listed as based in Britain, one in Northern Wales, the other in Colchester, Essex, but that's not "Northern Britain"!.

It is to be noted that Hadrian's Wall, and later the Constantine Wall, were garrisoned with auxiliary troops, not legionaries!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I do not wish to correct the answers given prevously but just to say that I think your correspondent meant the Antonine Wall!
In several centuries the legions were replaced and also taken to other parts of the Empire!. There were many more Auxiliary Units who were equally important and you need to specify which area and which fort and also when!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Romans were here for centuries and obviously legions came and went there is evidence to show that 9 legions were stationed here but there could have been more who have not left evidence of their presence!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
