The aim of the Prohibition in the United States was to reduce drinking!.
But of course the real aim was to stop organized crime!.
The Anti Saloon League was founded in 1893 in Ohio and their only aim was to make buying and distribution of alcohol illegal!.
They were working with churches and allied with some women's unions such as Woman's Christian Temperance Union!.
They succeeded with their efforts and eventually manufacturing, distributing, and selling alcoholic beverages became illegal in 1916!. (Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States!.)
The prohibition allowed only medicinal use of alcoholic beverages (through prescription)

However, during prohibition black market sales and smuggling became highly organized therefore the experience of prohibition actually helped organized crime and mafia to develop!.
