I am facinated by the years right before and after the Civil War!. This country saw so much change!. Every major event leaves change, but this was a very pivotal time!. A mixture of arrogance and ignorance openened a box of unwanted revelations!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I love the ANZAC tradition in my country, Australia!. Yesterday we celebrated Anzac day, which is the anniversary of Australia's first major casualty losses in history!. This happened in Gallipolli in the Dardenelles, in Turkey trying to capture the peninsula!. But things went terribly wrong, they landed on a skinny cliff laden beach where they suffered over 5,000 casualties within 3 minutes of the landing!. What followed was a long engrained trench battle in horrible, hot conditions and ended when the coldest winter in history in the area after the death of some 75,000 Australians and similiar numbers of New Zealanders!. Although the battle was horrific and our men showed enormous courage under siege, what I love about this historic moment is the tradition spurred!. Every Anzac day we gather at dawn to celebrate the lives of those lost and what we gained - yesterday I attended one dawn service where over 20,000 people attended, then we watch the veterans march and then we play two-up a game that was borne in the trenches and is still enjoyed today!. All in all the day makes you extremely proud to be an Australian!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Scottish Wars of Independence!. Being Scottish that period of history has reverberated down over hundred of years and shapes the consciousness of the Scottish people to this day!. This was the time of William Wallace, Andrew Murray and King Robert the Bruce, true patriotic heroes who withstood, pushed back and eventually defeated the English armies which at the time was the most powerful and feared force in all Christendom!.

The film Braveheart attempts to depict these times, unfortunately it is historically inaccurate and makes the Scots and their greatest Hero King, Robert the Bruce, look ridiculous however it does capture the spirit of the times!.

It is truly a tale of David and Goliath which proves that even the smallest of nations can defeat the most powerful, why!?!.!.!.!.because of the love of their native soil!Www@QuestionHome@Com

For the UK I'm most interested in the Dark Ages just after the Romans left!. This is simply because we have so little information on this period and I would be curious as to how a nations civilisation could actually take a backward step!

From a US point of view I'm most interested in the civil war period!. I do a lot of alternative history reading (Harry Turteldove etc) and it seems that this period in History defined present day USA as much as any other, and things could have easily gone a different way!Www@QuestionHome@Com

New Zealand History is very young!. Europeans began to settle in NZ in the early 1800's!. Britain finally mandated a treaty with Maori in 1840!.
Known as The Treaty of Waitangi!.
It is this treaty that interests me because it was at this pivotal point in Aotearoa/New Zealand History that "Maori" gave Europeans and all others the honour and privilege of "Guest" in NZ!.
As I understand it, (and I am liable to be slammed here by many kiwis), Maori, gave there permission for all others to be here in this country as "guests" or "visitors"!.
Many will say that they 'seeded' or 'handed over' there rights to be self governing when they signed the treaty!.
This is where the problem lies!
There were two translations of the original treaty!.
A 'Maori' Version and an 'English' Version!.
Depending on which side of the fence you are on, so to speak, determines how you interpret and apply the two versions!
It interests me because not only did my ancestors travel to this country in the 1860's from Switzerland, many centuries earlier Maori arrived on these shores as visitors as well! It is said that Maori first arrived here as early as 950AD!.
Debate will always be robust and vocal here in NZ regarding the treaty etc etc!. For all intents and purposes it is this nations founding document!. Whether it will see the light of day as a document which has significant value towards building a nation or have the same status as equal and important as the Declaration of Independence, only the future, in due course will reveal!Www@QuestionHome@Com

being a military historian and being in the army, i like to read things concerning the civil war, i had relatives that fought in it, ww1, ww2, korea, vietnam, and the move west between 1830-1890!. i find that these particular eras and what we did in them, are very pivotal in this nations history!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, technically this is before the formation of the nation as we know it, but I'm interested in the unwritten history of pre columbus life the Americas!. I mean we've been taught in school mainly how native americans hunted buffalo or grew corn and helped out settlers and then got scrwed!. But there's so much mystery about how poeple really lived and what events took place before Europeans came!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There has been over two thousand year of Great history in my nation, but I suppose that I would have to say, either the Georgians or the Victorians, during (apart from the Roman empire), The greatest empire in the world, where we conquered 2/3 of the known world, to be more precised, between the Nelson+Wellington Period!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
