Because unlike in the north the southern economy was based largely around cash crops like cotton,tobacco and indigo which required a lot of labor to grow and harvest!. The end of slavery made all these crops unprofitable because by the time you paid your workers their very little profit left over!. You could no longer run the large plantations that made up the majority of the southern economy because it was no longer worth because they would lucky to even turn a profit and say the crop fails and you have nothing to sell you still have to pay workers for planting it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

With slavery at an end,the crops that were planted had better come in or you don't get to pay the landlord his percentage as rrent on the land you're sharewcropping!. New crops like potatoes and peanuts were inckluded to tobacco and cotton!. One year you grew one crop,the next year you grew something else to keep the soil fertile and keep the money rolling in!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
