A vain attempt by the USA to stem what it interpreted as the first steps of the domino effect where Asian countries would collapse like dominoes under communism!. The Vietnamese army under Ho Chi Minh & General Giap were the first to defeat the Japanese in Asia in WWII!. The French colonialists returned to re-establish their control over the country but failed as the Vietnamese had tasted frrdom!. following the defeat at Dien Bin Phu in 1954 France negotiated a withdrawal!. However the USA intervened and the rest is history which delayed a united Vietnam from becoming a reality for another 20 years!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
