I was born of jewish parents in Germany, 6 weeks before Hitler was picked as Chancellor of Germany!.!. i was reared by a childless aunt and uncle since my parents left soon after my birth to go to Belgium at the time Hitler became Chancellor of Germany!. They expected to return after he was gone, but thatdid not happenas soon as they had expected!. Soat the age of 6 I was whisked away from my childless aunt and uncle, wo until then i thought were my parents to my actual biological parents in Belgium!. It was a turning point in my life because had that not happened i would not write this as I would have shared the fate of those who reared me , that is I would have been one ofth estimated 1!.5 million Jewish children murdered by the sadist Nazis!. Ilearned about the Holocaust end of June 1942 over the radio broadcast of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and also a farewell post card received from my late aunt that she was being deported and wishing me a good life THE BBC announced that the Jews deported were being massacred upon arrival in P
oland!. Soon thereafter, my family and i went into hiding!. I survived the Holocaust as a teenager!. in hiding, and was not caught and deported!.That was a miracle ,!. I have no explanation for it!.That is I survived living in the underground in Southeast Belgium from the age of 9 1/2 years old till 12!. I did not go to school during that time living mostly in rural areas avoiding other children !.Often I was close to be caught and deported and surely be put to death like the estimated 1!.5 million Jewish children!. I !.lived in constant fear!. My family and I moved each 6 month so as not to arouse any suspicion from neighbors in the rural areas of what later was known t where the Battle of the Bulge too k place and I witnessed , another close call!. There the SS killed even Belgian non jewish civilians duting the Battle of the Bulge, the worst battle of the war, in terms of casualties!. on both sides!. Naturally i would say that these are events in one's lives through and are indelible in one'/s minds!. Much I recall like it had happened yesterday!. i emigrated alone to the US in l952, was drafted the following year and in l954, returned to occupy Germany as a n American soldier!. I had a succesful life as a history professor and political economist under 6 Presidential administrations!.for the Federal Government!. !. I am now 75 and retired 15 years I noted that many persons , oddlly adult Jews do not believe me, but I ignore since I can understand that unless you went through such horrible days in your youth , there is no way one can understand !. There is no explanation for those who do not believe me, except I feel pity for their lack of understanding!. They talk about the Holocaust but cannot accept that I , in the flesh, talking to them, survived!. Yes, and all those who are like that, I am sorry to write have been American jews!.My wife often present thinks they simply do not want to know or whatever problem they may have!. My own rabbi seems to me also ignoring!. So, now I rarely attend the synagogue!. Ironically , the synagogue I belong to has an outsider come to give a talk on May 4th on Belgium and the Holocaust when it is known what I just wrote!. I Those who reared me until age 6 were killed as I would have been to if I had not been whisked away at the age 6 to Belgium from my native Germany!. They were murdered either at Majdaneck and Sobibor concentration camps in Poland!.If youare sincerely interested you may join the Yahoo! group I moderate called Remember_The _Holocaust!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am 46 years old and learned about the Holocaust when I was a junior in high school around 1978!. My history teacher spent a great deal of time on the subject and we saw several educational films that were extremely graphic and hard to watch!. It had a profound impact on me and does to this day!.

For me is was the 3rd grade, so around age 8 or 9!. I know this because we watched a slide show in school with many horrible pictures!. I went to a Catholic highschool, and we held a "Remembrance Day" Mass!. We had a prayer held for all of those who died in all the world wars, and special talks of the Holocaust!. We saw pictures and photos, dead bodies and dying bodies, all while the saddest music in the world (as perceived by an 8 year old) was playing!. The idea was so horrible, the images so gruesome, and the atmosphere was so intense that I remember crying!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think I was thirteen!. I'm fairly sure they skipped over that in grade school!. World history was so huge that they concentrated on events and dates rather than detail!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I new about it vaguely by the first grade!.Had heard about people being mistreated and killed in concentration camps!. When I was 11 I had a bicycle newspaper delivery route and the neighborhood paper drop was at the house of a lady that managed us delivery boys was very irritable some of the time!.
I complained about her to my mother!.Mom told me to say nothing but look at Mrs H's wrists!.Next day I came home and told my mother that Mrs!.H!. had numbers tattooed on her arm!. Mom sat me down and explained that Mrs!.H had survived a concentration camp but none of her relatives had!.She went into detail about what she knew about the camps and the gas chambers!.Then she told me that I should bear these things in mind if I find myself about to lose my temper over Mrs!. H's occasional crankiness and remain kind to her!.
In the seventh grade I researched more after seeing a documentary on PBS with Nazi film footage of the camps!.There were also horrible film footage from the US Army shot when the camps were liberated!.

I was in the third grade, so it would have been 1963 or '64, and I would have been either 7 or 8!. My father had been watching a TV program about the Nürnberg (Nuremberg) trials!. I was in bed, it was way past my bedtime, but I couldn't sleep because he had the volume on the TV up high enough that I could hear enough to be absolutely horrified!.

I finally couldn't stand it anymore, and went downstairs and asked him to turn the volume on the TV down!. It was the only time in my life that he ever apologized to me!. It was also the only time in my life that I can remember that he didn't punish me for crying!.

The next day my mother told me not to talk to other kids about what I'd heard, not even my brothers, as it was something that they should learn from their parents when they were older!. She said I shouldn't think about it all the time, even though I shouldn't ever forget it completely, either!. But she told me that it was something that had happened a long time ago, long before I was born!.
