That is a difficult question seeing as there are so many different positions one could have had on board a ship and there were different kinds of ships as well Professional mariners lived on the margins of society!. Much of their life spent beyond the reach of land!. They face cramped, stark, noisy, and often dangerous conditions!. Yet they went and still go out to sea!. For some, the attraction was a life unencumbered with the restraints of life ashore!. Sea-going adventure and a chance to see the world also appeal to many seafarers!. Whatever the calling, those who live and work at sea invariably confront social isolation!.

Here are a few positions men held on board ships at that time:

Captain, ship master (navigation, ship handling) lieutent, midshipman, bo'sign, coxsign, carpenter, cook, armorer, gunner, master of arms, topman, common sailor, doctor, surgeons mate

each position had a job description and duties that had to be fullfilled!. Occasionally a man could hold more than one position if the need arose!. With the hardships men faced at sea death was a constant threat!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A lot like sailors did now adays, they just had different types of boats!. there were also pirates, so you could take that into consideration!. Like the other posts, sailors often did, sail boats, go figure!. lolWww@QuestionHome@Com
