The escape network of The Underground Railroad was not literally subterranean, but rather "underground" in the sense of underground resistance!.

It was an informal network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th century Black slaves in the United States to escape to free states (or as far north as Canada) with the aid of abolitionists who were sympathetic to their cause!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
