Question: History of THE titanic!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
There are a lot of books and websites on this; surf around!.

The short version is that it was built in Belfast, Ireland, as one of three flagships (Titanic, Olympic, Gigantic) of the White Star line!. It sailed to Southampton to pick up it's first passengers, then to Cherbourg, France, just across the English Channel, and finally to Queenstown (now known as Cobh) Ireland before departing for New York City!.

Over halfway across the Atlantic, the ship struck an iceberg at night!. This opened up a gash across several watertight compartments, allowing water to flood the ship!. According to the design standards of the day, it was not considered credible that over four watertight compartments could flood, and the ship was built to stay afloat if this happened!. However, the long gash allowed five compartments to flood, dooming the ship!. The collision took place just after 11:40 pm, by 2:20 am the following morning the ship was under water!.

The ship was outfitted (again, according to the prevailing theory of the day) with enough lifeboats to transfer all the passengers to a rescue vessel provided that each boat made several trips!. There were not enough lifeboats to hold all the passengers!. In addition, this was before lifeboat drills were commonplace on ocean liners, so many of the lifeboats were launched nearly empty as the passengers disbelieved that the ship was about to sink and were reluctant to leave it!.

There were enough life belts (a precursor of the life preserver) for all the passengers, so when the ship went under, relatively few of the passengers drowned!. The waters were bitter cold, however, and nearly all of the passengers who were not in lifeboats succumbed to hypothermia, most within an hour!. 1,517 people out of the 2,223 onboard perished!.

The great tragedy inspired numerous improvements in maritime safety, ranging from the establishment of ice patrols, to new lifeboat regulations, to changes in ship design!. Numerous books and movies were also produced that dwelt on the disaster!.

In 1985, over 70 years later, Dr!. Robert Ballard discovered the wreck under two miles of water, split in two!. The bow section was relatively intact, but the stern was nearly destroyed!. Other expeditions were able to recover numerous artifacts from the wreckage!.

In 1997, yet another Titanic move was released, one that won several academy awards including best picture!. The characters Rose, Jack, and Rose's fiancee are all fictional, but aside from their adventures, the movie is a reasonably factual recreation of Titanic's first and last voyage!.

There is but one living survivor of the disaster, a 96 year-old woman from England who was a 2-month old infant at the time of the tragedy!. There are plans for a 100-year commemoration of the event in 2012!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
