Athens was the most powerful Greek naval power!. Sparta was the most powerful land army in Greece!. Although they were rivals, they were both fiercely independent and considered themselves to be free!.

The Athenians ran afoul of the Persians by supporting the Ionians in a revolt of their Persian masters on the western coast of what is now Present day Turkey!. The Ionians were culturally related to the Athenians but were part of the Persian empire at that time!. The Persian emperor was outraged that anyone would defy him and had his servant remind him every day to "remember the Athenians!"!.

When the Persians invaded many Greek city-states gave earth and water (a symbol of subservience) to the massive Persian army!. The Spartans would have been content to wall off the isthmus of Corinth and defend against attack, but the Athenians pointed out that if the Athenians fell to the Persians then the Persians would have the Naval power to bypass the wall and attack any where on the coast!. We all saw "300" battle of Thermopylae!. The following year the battle of Plataea was fought resulting in Greek victory!.

Some 20 years earlier, the Athenians repulsed the Persians single-handedly at the battle of Marathon in the Persians first attempt!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ohhh that's my specialty even have a spartan tattoo on my chest!. Well they joined forces to basically fight for the comon good since Persia wanted to control pretty much all of the world and Athens and Sparta were the two big powers that said "No way Jose!" after that other Greek city states followed!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

yes because neither wanted the bigger persian army to rule them and they wanted to maintain the rights to the "hot gates" a major sea port in greece it enabled their export and import of goods, basically controlling their economyWww@QuestionHome@Com
