Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
In spite of the loss of New Amsterdam to the English, it can be argued that the Dutch Republic was the leading colonial power of the 17th century!. After winning its independence from Spain at the end of the 16th century, the Dutch Republic became a powerful seafaring nation, using its sea power to build a colonial empire around the world, mostly under the commercial umbrellas of the Dutch East Indies Company for its Asian possessions and the Dutch West Indies Company for its possessions in the Americas!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
