Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The punishments were held in public to show what happens if you break the law and also for public entertainment for those who enjoy that sort of thing!.

I can't say I'd be rushing off to see an execution!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

kings/landlords like it when people see how powerful they are!. It makes people fear for their lives!. those in authority like to show the consequences one would get if they try to violate the lawWww@QuestionHome@Com

because they had to set an example of those committing the act of treason, robbery, murder, etc!. it is still the same today just with the court officials and others whom are deemed necessary to be there!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

they were held in public as a warning to others about what would happen to them, if they too indulged in the crimes!. The imperial romans made them public spectacles = people were sadistic enough to enjoy seeing others suffer!. even right down to about a couple of centuries back, in europe and america punishments were held in public as a lesson and warning to others!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In an age with no Internet or Newspapers the best way to send a message or rather to implant a notion was to do it publicly hence many punishments were public spectacles!. Not only hanging or beheading but branding a thief with a hot iron or closer to Georgian times putting petty criminals in 'stocks,' wooden restraining devices with miscreants in full public view and the public encouraged to spit or throw things at the criminal!.
The human mind is a funny thing!. One would like to think that a public execution would put fear in people and cause them to think twice about committing crime!. Unfortunately the result was often a perverse form of entertainment!. People would treat a public executuion as a entertainment gathering to jeer the criminal, to drink & be lewd & vulgar!.
As for How I would feel I choose not to reveal - - - for an assignment such as this you must reach within yourself though I will 'speak' for others and suggest that for many they fell into the trap of thinking that such punnishment could nt happen to them and thus refer to the above citation of executions as public entertainment!.

they don't have newspaper/television before, so they cannot spread the news easily once someone had been executed!.

this also shows the stability of the government (or whatever they call it before) that they really implement such punishment, leaving great fear for folks to think hardly first before committing the crime that will lead them to the same tradegy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you think this is a hard problem wait until you grow up!. If your teacher wanted me to do this assignment, she would have given it to me, not you!
Shame on those of you who do this young lady's homework for her!. No wonder the youth of today seem to be losing basic learning skills!Www@QuestionHome@Com

1 lie
There are no Sunni mosques in Tehran!. As an ex-shiite I can tell you that!. The sunnis were to get a mosque & allowed to assemble in parks, but now he says I can't hurt shiite feelings and the supreme leader Khomeini has refused permission!. he lied!
Sunnis are referred to as Nasibi dogs in their mosques, and killing a sunni is more rewarding than fasting for a whole month!. recently a sunni man who tried to pray in a shia mosque with his hands folded, got his hands chopped off!.

The prophecy still had to be fulfilled! "Unto us a child is born, a son is given, and he will be the wonderful counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting father and the prince of peace!." Isaiah 9:6

70 years before the destruction of the temple messiah Isa/Jesus came, if he had not come then as the Messiah we would be left with no fulfillment of Isaiah and the commanded blood sacrifice for sin by Moses= Leviticus 17:11 "The blood makes atonement for the soul!."
Isaiah 53 "All we like sheep have gone astray, and the Lord will make to light on him, the iniquity of us all!." "He will lay down his life to make atonement for our soul"

the way i came to know him was the prayer Isa/Jesus asks us to say;

"Help me Jesus, I am sorry for my sins, even one lie, come into my heart and be my friend, amen"

this he promises to do Revelation 1:1 chapter 1 verse 1 and 3:19&20 "I love you, and ask you to repent of sin quickly!. Behold I stand at your heart door and knock, if you ask me in I will come in and be your friend!. " (sup/have fellowship) Jesus is my best friend now!.

Yet, in free lands we have prison for these types!." Did Prophet Mohammed beat his wife Ayesha according to Muslim Hadith!?
Muslim Hadith (4:2127) - Muhammad struck his favorite wife, Aisha, in the chest one evening when she left the house without his permission!. Aisha narrates, "He struck me on the chest which caused me pain!."

It is true that it was done to discourage any would be criminals, rebels, etc!. Another more macabre answer is true as well!. Corporal and capital punishment were the biggest form of free entertainment!. As a matter of fact the word "gala"(meaning large social gathering) is derived from the word gallows (executionary platform for hanging people)!. They even had vendors selling rotten fruit to throw at the, soon to be deceased, prizonersWww@QuestionHome@Com

To make an example of the criminals to try and prevent more crime! However this did worked well for a while, but then people started to stand up for themselves!.
The lords and kings thought it made them look big and powerful but it just made them look evil and cruel"Www@QuestionHome@Com

In an age with poor methods of detection and criminal investigation, "conviction rates" (as we would call them) were desperately low!.
Where the chance of being caught are modest the requirement for examples is equally modest!. Punishment can be private & proportional!. If the chance of being caught is low the temptation to commit a potentially profitable crime is high!. As a consequence the law must be, and be seen to be (hence public,) able to hand out punishments that are suitably off-putting!. Hanging was considered a reasonable spectacle as the person jigged on the rope for a few minutes but other punishments (HD&Q, breaking-on-the-wheel etc) gave the public some real theatre!.

This is law and order with no allusions to rehabilitation, the law existed to maintain property & public order!.

We also have to remember that on a local level the beaurocracy & infrastructure did not exist to hand out modern sentences!.
- The economy was thinly monetarised, making fines impossible for the bulk of the population!.
- Jails were rare (tended to be ajuncts to fortresses etc) and generally only for holding high profile criminals
- Resouces were not as plentiful as in later periods - execution, mutilation & various forms of public humiliation/discomfort were cheap & had no ongoing labour requirments!.

By all accounts the public were made to feel part of the process of justice and enjoyed the opportunity to verbally abuse the convicted!. In a time when people were less squeamish and violence was not necessarily seen as repugnant - the gore of more elaborate executions & mutilations (severing of nosed, ears, fingers; branding etc) would not have repulsed the audience as it would a modern gathering!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
