Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The problem with listing African countries as having "not benefitted" is that clearly SOMEONE in those countries benefitted, considering there was open collusion with the European slavers!. African tribes would sell their captives from war to the Europeans!. So in truth, all of those regions that were victims of the slave trade were also participants in it, as they had practices slavery long before the Europeans came along!. The answer is that yes, virtually ever society has, at some point in history, practiced slavery!. At one time is was just a commonly accepted practice!. If fact, it was often seen as more humane, since the alternative was massacre of captives!. None of this excuses the moral outrage that was the more modern slavery practiced by Europeans in the Americas!. It can be convincingly argued that by that point, considering the period was called the "Age of Enlightenment," they knew better!. EDIT: the poster below me is very misinformed!. Slavery certainly was used by the Egyptians, whether to build pyramids or not!. It was used for plantation labor!. And there is scarcely a society that hasn't tolerated and utlized slavery at some point in its history: http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Slavery_in_!.!.!. http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/History_of_!.!.!. As I mentioned before, this is in no way an excuse for slavery as an institution, anywhere!. The moral wrongness of it is obvious absent any societal context!. But it has indeed been ubiquitous until relatively recently!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Question: did a nation ever benefit from slavery!. Places using slavery or serfdom seem to have consistently been backward places!. Worse, many places seem to have been plagued by slavery!. Why did the ante bellum North industrialised and not the South!? Slavery is an institution that makes a few monopolize a large share of a small pie instead of going for a smaller share of a bigger pie!. So to answer your question those that did not benefit from slavery were those that implemented and used it!. Those that benefited from slavery were those that did not have slavery!. Having slaves is like shooting in the foot of your economy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com new ghinieWww@QuestionHome@Com I would go for the countries from the Ivory Coast to the Slave Coast in West Africa - Liberia, Ghana, Togo, Dahomey etc!. I don't think any of these countries has used slavery themselves, and they certainly didn't benefit from the American slave trade!. You could also argue that no country in the world has ever benefited from Slavery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com There are countries which never had slavery the lie that every single society in this world had slavery is absurd and mostly used by people trying to dismiss the transatlantic as just another example of It has been proven that Ancient Egypt didn't use slaves to build their pyramids but was a workforce from close villages who lived in good conditions and were even buried near the pyramids with respect!. Arab slave trade- 2nd most biggest slave trade was not really a slave trade but many isolated slave trades which occurred in different locations over a long period of time but involved Arabs and north African captives making it an Arab slave trade!. Between 650 - 1900 (1,250 years) Trans Atlantic & Triangle Trade- This was the most biggest effective and devastating trade ever on Earth which can not be dismissed by calling it human nature!. * Arab trade was 3 times longer yet the Atlantic had double the amount of people sold!. * 1440- 1850 began with Portugal ended with Brazil * 40,000,000 abducted * 25,000,000 death toll total *15,000,000 survive shipment to the new world * Humans were shipped across the Atlantic 3-6 week period killing 17,000,000 * 19th century saw 21,000,000 people abducted (52!.8 of the total) * In the transatlantic alone included 25 present day countries not including the two continents where they ended but 4 continents were involved 3 benefited one lost: Europe bought 32,000,000 Africans Portugal 35!.4% 11,328,000 Britain 24!.8% 7,936,000 Spain 22!.1% 7,072,000 France 14!.1% 4,512,000 Netherlands 4!.4% 14,080,00 Denmark 0!.2% 64,000 Africa kidnapped 40,000,000 Africans Nigeria 22% 8,800,000 Democratic Republic of Congo 20% 8,000,000 Angola:13% 5,200,000 Ghana: 10!.3% 4,120,000 Republic of Congo 6!.3% 2,520,000 Cameroon: 5% 2,000,000 Senegal: 4% 1,600,000 Benin: 4% 1,600,000 Mozambique 3% 1,200,000 Guinea 2!.4% 960,000 Togo 2!.1% 840,000 Equatorial Guinea: 2% 800,000 Madagascar: 1!.6% 640,000 Sierra Leone: 1% 400,000 Cote d' Ivoire: 1% 400,000 The Gambia: 0!.8% 320,000 Liberia 0!.7% 280,000 Gabon: 0!.6% 240,000 Guinea-Bissau 0!.2% 80,000 North, Central & South America bought 15,000,000 Africans South & Central America- 51!.6% 7,740,000 Caribbean- 42!.8% 6,420,000 North America (Today USA)- 5!.6% 840,000 Many countries in Africa and Asia even Europe and old America have never done slavery!. Of course the source of the western worlds wealth has its roots in that numerous centuries of free labour a large free workforce numerous reasourses which we can call the trans Atlantic slave trade!. The industrial revolution would not of been possible if it weren't for the trans Atlantic trade starting up the economies of those countries WW2 would not of happened which resulted in many advances the world has today in communication military/defense power energy and transport!. If not the world benefited from the worlds biggest slave trade one way or the other while the continent with the sources of the slaves is simply in many parts stuck in the 18th century!. Portugal bought the most shipped the most and enslaved the most where are they today!?Www@QuestionHome@Com |
