Fashon has experienced great leaps throughout the 20th Century more so for women then for men and for men it is mostly a matter of what is tolerated!. Women went from ankle length dresses at the turn of the 20th Century to knee or higher dresses by the end of the century!. And women began wearing PANTS!. Unthinkable in 1901, a freak novelty in the 1930s, by the 1990s even men were willing to concede that Janet Reno and Hillary Clinton, among others, looked better in 'pant suits' then dresses (the one time Janet Reno wore a thong it caused a riot)!.
The biggest change for men was in fabric!. In 1900 well into the 1940s men wore WOOL or Linen and suits were scratchy uncomfortable and yet men were expected to wear suits all the time!. Even for sports!! But then came Polysester and other light weight man made fabrics and so by the 1990's men were much cooler and comfortable!. And men could get away with wearing button up shirts and jeans in many situations, unthinkable decades earlier!.

One BIG and I do mean BIG change for Men was Hats!. In 1900 Men wore Hats!. Mostly Bowlers or Derbies, but by the 1920s the Fedora was most common!. As late as 1960 President John F Kennedy wore a TOP HAT to huis inaugeral!. Can you imagine Geo W in a Top Hat!! Speaking of Presients, Ronald Reagan was the First Prez who looked Cool wearing a Western style Stetson, earlier Presidents just looked silly wearing Cowboy Hats (ever seen Geo W wearing one!!)!.!.!.!.
But by the 1960 s men wear no longer expected to wear a hat though by the 1990s baseball style caps were in especially for men who were hair challenged!.
A consistency for Men has been the Tie!. This weird habit of wearing a rope around a man's neclk persists though up to 1940 many men wore a bow tie nowadays any man wearing a bow tie is considerd a candidate for the nut bin!.

Back to the Ladies!. The biggest change!. In 1900 well into the the 1950s women wore gloves!. All sorts of gloves!. Different gloves for different occassions!. A great example is Kim Novak in 'North by Northwest,' scrambling down the faces of Mount Rushmore dodging danger in the arms of Cary Grant, Miss Novak wears her gloves!. Even when women stripped down to their scanties they wore gloves!.
Oh and that is the other big change for women!. Especially from 1900 to the 1950s early 60s women wore lots and lots and lots of underwear!. We're talking pantyhose, socks, girdles, panties, bras, sometimes more!! Most men didn't have sex with women because by the time they got down to the final layer they were exhausted!!!!!!!

Oh and Hats!. Women use to wear hats!. In fact by the 1930s it was down right silly!. We are talking weird geometric shapes, birds & feathers and veils and other strange concoctions perched on women's heads!. That habbit died out mostly during the 1960s!.

The 1960s especially the middle saw many conventions discarded!. Women threw off their girdles, burned their bras, tossed aside their hats and for a very brief while dresses went to mid thigh!.

As to the why well this essay has already exceeded what most people tolerate on this format (I most likely have my usual thumbs down by now) so suffice it to say that fashion is one way people can express themselves and as the 20th Century progressed people felt mre free to express themselves!.

PS not to be a suck up but I thought XX was cool!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sorry, what the hell is XX century!?

There's nothing sexier than a gentleman of the West wearing a $500!.00 handmade cowboy hat along with his expensive cowboy boots and a custom made suit!. In 2008!. No matter how old the gentleman!.
Basically, a man or woman who is comfortable in their own skin looks great no matter what they wear!. Once women were "allowed" to get rid of all that ridiculous underwear previously mentioned, it effected their entire outlook!. They became people - not dolls on a shelf!.
Look at women in the "Old" West - the REAL ones!. No whalebone corsets for them!.
A doozy of an expression I've learned is true: Dress for the job you WANT, not the job you have!.
I don't know if any of that helps you - but neat and clean is the sexiest of all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
