Greetings! I just looked up the name "Mehringer" in the Oxford Companion to World War II and failed to come up with a name, nor did I find the name in the index of "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", by William Shirer.

Someone with that much power would definitely show up somewhere in my World War II books , and if he had survived the war, he would have most likely been on the dock at the Nuremberg trials.

Is it possible that you are mistaking your namesake with Josef Mengele, the sadistic doctor/scientist assigned at Auschwitz?

I also looked up the name "Mehringer" in Wikipedia. There was reference to a "Karl Mehringer" who was killed in 1935 in an effort to climb Mt. Eiger, in the Swiss Alps.

I'm a bit of an armchair historian regarding World War II. If you would like to e-mail me, I can see what I can do to help you.

To a common layperson, your search sounds highly macabre, but to an academician like me, I find your search to be highly intriguing. I would be very interested in what you find (just for the record, I'm not a Nazi nor a fanatic of Hitler, but very intrigued by WWII history).

Hope to hear from you. Good luck and take care.

nope, there doesn't seem to be a "Mehringer"

the guys that would have been in charge under Hitler would have been: Goering, Speer, Himmler, goebbels etc. no "Mehringer".

the closest name i know of is "Mengele" but he certainly wasnt 3rd or 4th in charge under Hitler.

You know, I read a lot of military history, and I have done my fair share of reading about Hitler and his cronies, and I don't ever recall reading the name Mehringer. It doesn't mean he wasn't in the mix someplace, only that I am unaware of it.

A quick search of Hitler's inner circle reveals all the well-known names--Himmler, Goering, Goebbels, et al., but no Mehringer. Is it possible that he was either not an officer, and was, instead, someone like a personal valet or bodyguard, or was in charge of something, like a camp, and not actually tied in closely with Hitler?

Mehringer is definitely a German name, but the only German of note I was able to find by that name was a Karl Mehringer, and he was a mountaineer who died in 1935, which means he died within a few years of Hitler taking power. That would put him in the clear for being part of Hitler's inner circle later on and during the war.

The only other thing I can think of is that he was someone who served with Hitler in the German Army in WWI, or maybe someone who helped Hitler in his early days when he was still just talking and agitating in beer halls.

If you could supply more information, like his first name, his date of birth, or anything else, it might be easier to find out if he was, in fact, one of Hitler's friends or crazy cronies. Try hitting up older members of your family on that side--you'd be surprised at what information is hidden in the heads of older relations like great aunts and great uncles, distant cousins, etc.

Good luck on your search. If you find out anything for sure, please contact me, as I am curious. In the meantime, I will keep an eye out for the name in my reading.

Good luck, and happy hunting!
