Also, people were getting concerned about some practices by countries (Japan, Germany, Italy) that would eventually be the Axis powers in World War II, expressing their concern through various boycotts. I won't do your homework for you, but that might give you some places to start. The fact that the country started major landmark projects might count. Like the Golden Gate Bridge.
