The 1936 Summer Olympic Games might be a good topic to research. Also, people were getting concerned about some practices by countries (Japan, Germany, Italy) that would eventually be the Axis powers in World War II, expressing their concern through various boycotts. I won't do your homework for you, but that might give you some places to start.

The fact that the country started major landmark projects might count. Like the Golden Gate Bridge.

There was the economic downturn that began in 1929.
