Position:Home>History> Why did Petronius criticize Nero before he died? (Tacitus)?

Question:Because Nero liked the man and consulted with him over matters of taste. Nero was a vulgar man. He respected Petronius' opinion. This gave the former consul a lot of power with the emperor and made him an influential favorite of Nero's. Basically, if Petronius did not give something his seal of approval, Nero might reject the thing.

But a jealous man, named Tigellinus, also a favorite of Nero's, falsely named Petronius in a conspiracy against the emperor.

Petronius knew he had been framed and his erstwhile patron now turned against him. He knew he could not defend himself in court and so decided that he might seek some revenge against Nero even at the threshold of his death.

Petronius published a scandalous account of Nero's vices and debauched behavior. This wounded the pride of Nero and his final touch against Nero before he committed suicide was to abjure his loyalty to Nero and break his signet ring so that nobody could create false documents under his name.
Regards.
