Cosmo d'Medici was an Italian baker who invented the communion wafer. He brought a sample to Pope Leo X and tried to convince him that the Church could save immense amounts of time, labor and money by using the wafers instead of the loaves of bread they had been using.

When the Pope refused to consider the idea, d'Medici appealed to Lorenzo the Magnificent to intervene on his behalf. Lorenzo, who was never one to turn down an opportunity to add to the royal coffers, offered the Pope a bribe in the form of a percentage of profits from wafers sold to the Church.

The Pope agreed to this arrangement and soon Catholics everywhere were receiving the Body of Christ in the form of the now familiar dry and tasteless, yet economical wafers.
