He was appointed Spanish Viceroy of Chile in 1789 and of Peru in 1795.

He was an important leader in the Chilean Revolt of 1810-17.and was known as the Liberator of Chile.

In 1817-23, he was the new republic's first president but was deposed after a revolt and retired to Peru.
