The expenses of the Royal Family were not what drove the country into debt and toward revolution. [My books are all in storage so I can't look up the exact percentage of the debt that they comprised. Perhaps someone else on this forum can provide the exact figures.] Those pushing for revolution used something called "The Affair of the Necklace" to further ridicule Marie Antoinette. This was an elaborate con to get a high level cardinal to purchase an expensive necklace, presumably for the Queen. When the con was revealed it was a huge scandal.
