Colonization is when a country goes outside of its area and claims another piece of land as its own. Typically the goal of colonization is to make use of the resources of that land to provide wealth to the "mother" country. The colonists opressed the native people - Australian aborigines, American Indians, Asians, Africans, etc. Took the resources - gold, rubber, wildlife, etc.

Colonization began with the age of exploration and European countries had bitter rivalries about their colonial holdings.

Most colonies have since become independent. Some - such as Australia, Canada, United States, and Brazil have become dominated by those who came from Europe in terms of language, culture, population numbers as well as population in power. Others, such as several in Africa and some of the Pacific islands have the original native again in power. Others such as many in Latin America, the Caribbean, and South Africa have tension between native and European descendents.

Colonization has changed much of the world.
