Operation not 'oporation'.

'Operation Sealion' was Hitler's plan for an amphibious assault and invasion of England (and Britain).

After the Fall of France in May / June 1940 Hitler assumed that Britain would make peace and pull out of the war. He didn't reckon on Churchill's resolve to continue the war and as the summer drew on plans were drawn up for an amphibious assault on England.
Hitler, Goering (head of the German airforce) and the commanders of the German army all knew that an invasion of Britain would be virtualy impossible without command of the air. The German airforce (Luftwaffe) was therefore employed to attempt to destroy the British Royal airforce (the 'RAF' - and in particular the 'Fighter Command' section of the RAF).
This long battle (the Battle of Britain) which lasted about 3 months resulted in the failiure of the German airforce to destroy the RAF.
Without the command of the skies, operation Sealion could not take place or it would be extremely difficult.

A further complication (which is often overlooked) was the strength of the British navy (the Royal Navy) which was more powerful and with more ships than the German navy. Because of this any attempt at sending an invasion force against Britain would have been difficult anyway - but with the RAF still operational and undefeated, in October 1940 it was decided by Hitler to cancel Operation Sealion indefinetely and to begin plans for the invasion of Russia to take place sometime in the spring of 1941.

Those are the basics. I don't mind you (or anyone) using this if you want - but just READ it through a couple of times so you understand the events.

Well, I believe Sea Lion was the German code word for the invasion of England. Goering had promised that the RAF would be eliminated as an effective defense fairly quickly, but the Luftwaffe failed in this effort. By the time they got into early autumn, the Channel weather is typically treacherous in autumn, look at William of Normandy's multiple attempts to reach England in September 1066, and it was considered too late to invade. The focus was then turned toward Russia, which they invaded as part of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941.

Operation Sealion was the Nazi attempt to invade Britian after their conquest of France (Summer 1940).
It was called off after the RAF defeated the Luftwaffe in the 'Battle of Britian' (this was to be the first phase of the invasion plan). The Gemans understood any seaborne invasion was doomed without control of the air. After losing the air war, the Nazi's shifted their ground troops east for the invasion of the USSR in the summer of '41.
