Whigs and Democrats Similarities?

The Whig Party was formed to oppose the Democratic Party, so there would be very little common ground on policy. One historical similarity is that both parties struggled with an internal split between pro-slavery and anti-slavery wings. This ultimately destroyed the Whigs, and so handicapped the Democrats that they had no winning presidential candidate from 1860 to 1880.
