Position:Home>History> Have you been to the World Holocaust Museum in DC? What was your reaction.?

Question:I finally took the trip during my spring break, I have been wanting to go for ages.

On level 1 after I got my passport, I was not impressed. I was like I know all of this and why would anyone cry about this stuff ti is all about Hitler... but by the time I left I was in tears, each level gets more and more personal and more and more devastating.

My person died, she never had a chance to tell her story...someone else did. My eyes opened and I realized just how serious a genocide could be which makes Darfur even more upsetting. This stuff still happens today.

...For those who have not been, beware. I am far from the crying type, it takes a lot to make me shed a tear and I did. To get the full affect you have to read and watch the videos do not skip over stuff.

I also wish they would have went more into the personal lives of some, it didn't talk much about how family would even fight for food at times, or how some were being raped.

I live in the Suburb of Washington DC. I have visited it three times. I highly recommend it . It seems to me that the history of the Holocaust is presented as tactfully as one can do treat such a subbject. It takes two hours for the first time, but on repeat i stopped att he stations to view the videos, and read mre at the research center . They also have a Adnced study center which has occasionallyseminars which i attend. that is more academic, of course, Occasionally, lectures by professional historians are given in the evening. If youare unable to go, you ought to cosnuslt the website www.ushmm.org which is certainly quite comprehensive dealing practiacally all facets. In addition, the sitedeals wth other genocides, the mass murder of nonjews such as the Roma (gypsies),. It provides education in the full sense. it is a must visit if you can at all spare the time. Everybody who has been there on a visit, do not regret taking the time. It is a once in a lifetime visit maybe but it will certainly in that short of a time bring you greater insight of what the world is about. And, unfortunately, it still goes on in Darfur and other places werarely hear or read about such as the burning of Catholic churches and killing of Christians in Indonesia while the Pope is scared to offend the muslims! .. Sad! It seems humankind has never learned.. and tragedies continue ..oddly there are so many that now you read about it in paragraph hidden way in the back of newspapers. Initially the genocide of Rwanda was rteported on page 26 of the Washington Post. Only an outcry of good people led it eventually to front page..

I haven't been to DC, but I went to the Atomic bomb memorial in Hiroshima-I had to leave after 30 minutes, I just couldn't take any more.

i just wish i could take some Muslims with me to see them accuse the museum of propaganda and than say how much they hate Israel Blah blah blah blah

Yes - several times.
