She supported him in the way that most politicians wives support their husbands - by presenting a flawless facade in public, by being socially adept (and her fluency in other languages didn't hurt when it came to diplomatic receptions) by lending her name to charities and that sort of thing and by being the mother of his children.
She also supported him by not showing public outrage about his peccadilloes - and she was certainly aware of them.
