The Pope put England under interdiction, which meant they were effectively banned from receiving any of the church sacraments. At that point, Henry opted for forming his own church, the Church of England, or Anglicans as they are known today. It was very hard on the people of England because at that time, Catholicism was the only accepted religion in the land, and when people were told they could no longer receive the sacraments, they were very frightened and there were dire predictions about plagues and evil things to come. Henry was followed by his young son, Edward, who died before attaining his majority, then by his daughter, Mary, who attempted to restore the land to the Catholic faith, and finally his youngest daughter, Elizabeth, who became one of England's great queens.

I believe he started a National Church in England, I'm not sure though.

Henry broke away from the Catholic Church because the Pope wouldn't grant him a divorce. He became the head of the Anglican Church and confiscated all the Catholic Churches' land.

The people followed his lead and those who stayed Catholic stayed pretty quiet about it. Priests hid in various houses.

When Mary, his daughter, took over; she had those that would not change back to Catholic killed!

Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic church because he wanted to be able to annul his marriage to his first wife Catherine of Aragon, and marry Anne boleyn. The Pope would not grant henry an annullment, so he formed his breakaway Church of England, with himself as Supreme Head of the Church. The monasteries were dissolved and Henry seized their wealth.

The majority of the people of England had been quite happy with the Catholic religion, and were dismayed by the changes brought about by Henry. Pilgrimage shrines were destroyed, images were removed from churches, and many of the Saints Days that had been traditional holidays were cancelled, espeically those occuring in summer (the harvest season) because Henry thought the people should get on with the work of harvesting rather than having holidays.

The dissolution of the monasteries was a source of hardship to poor people who had recieved charity, hospitality, medical care and education from them.

There was a major uprising against the dissolution of the monasteries in the north of England, it was known as the Pilgrimage of Grace. It was put down with great savagery by Henry.

Although henry had broken away from the Catholic Church he never thought of himself as a Protestant, and continued to persecute Protestants during the remainder of his reign, for instance his sixth wife Catherine Parr got into serious trouble through being too matey with the protestant Anne Askew, who was burnt at the stake in 1546.
