The Trent Affair was an "international diplomatic incident" that occurred during the American Civil War. Basically, 2 Confederate diplomats (James Mason and John Siddell) tried to get to Europe to gather support for the Confederacy but were intercepted. The reason for why it's an 'incident' is that the diplomats were on a British ship when they were arrested and that 'interference' was unacceptable to the British. Sabers were rattled but after a few weeks, Lincoln freed the diplomats, which ended the incident.
