The U.S. had just suffered Pearl Harbor, and the pacific fleet was decimated. Great Briton was undergoing the blitz, as well as supplies being cut off by the U-boats. The Russians were being pushed back toward Stalingrad.

a.The battle for Guadalcanal was important to stop the invasion of Australia by the Japanese.
b. I believe you mean operation Overlord which was the invasion of Normandy by the Allies.

If either of these had failed, it could have easily changed the outcome of the war.

a. Stalin wanted a second front to give his armies a chance to regroup, and Germany would have to fight on two fronts, which would spread their resources and armies.
b.There are two primary reasons it took so long
1. Conduct an extensive bombing campaign, to cripple Germany's war manufacturing capability's, and to gain air Superiority.
2. Logistics, it takes quite a while to put together 3 million men and all the material required for an invasion, as well as follow up support.

4. Rommel, had been in control and was winning the North African campaign.The victory at El Alamein did two things.
1. It was the first true victory the British had experienced since the start of the war, so the boost in morale with British troops as well as the British people was immeasurable.
2. As the Germans fell back, it opened up staging areas for the allies to strike what was known are the underbelly of Europe, Italy
