There were several factors in the Civil War that needed- for the lack of a better word- clarification. The first being slavery. No human has the right to own another human. This statement was the difference between the North and the South. Southerners held that slaves were property therefore protected while the North held that slaves were but men and deserved of freedom.
Economics was by far the more driving force behind the war. The South had cheap labor while the Northern firms had to settle for newly immigrating Irish or others to do menial tasks but always at a cost. Add the abolitionist’s views and sparks started.
States Rights were the last of the factors. Up until the Civil War discussions had already started about what rights the States had and what part the Federal Government was to play in the process.
Together these three things changed the course of America making irreversible hallmarks on our country. Slavery was abolished but only after a long protracted war; States Rights was more clearly defined; and while the economy of the North triumphed in the end the South proved that with a little grit and a lot of nerve went farther than the most well equipped Union soldier.

What is this a history take home test? Get a book, read on it. The Civil War was a major event in American history. So many people think it was about slavery and it wasn't. Slavery was a small component, although the outcome of the war was huge FOR the abolition of slavery. The numbers of people who died are amazing, the things they were fighting for were amazing.

For one, in comparison to the size of the population, the Civil War was the bloodiest war the US ever fought. The casualties per capita were much higher than in WW II, and the fighting was on our own soil. In the North some 50% of the men were directly involved in the war effort; in the South it was 75%. These figures are incredible.
The Civil War ended slavery, which might have become very unfashionable in another 50 years anyway, even in the South. The Union victory was deeply resented by Southerners and caused them to blame the slaves, who they victimized in new ways by turning them into serfs and terrorizing them through the KKK and other racist organizations. The racist propaganda from the South poisoned the entire country right up to now.

1. For the damage it did. (see previous answers)
2. Because one of its results was the demise of slavery.
3. It established once and for all the reply to the question of balance between states rights and central authority. That is, it established a limit on states rights. Which means that it defined what the USA is today.
