The "father" of Ivory Coast's independence was Félix Houphou?t-Boigny. After being conquered by France in the 1890s, C?te d'Ivoire was claimed as a colonial territory and was used for agriculture. Houphou?t-Boigny, in response to unfair policies enacted by the French government, organized an alliance of cocoa farmers to go into business for themselves. He was eventually elected to France's Parliament, and became the nations first President when the French relinquished their claims to the colony.
