He was a Confederate general who served under Jackson and Lee. Hill was a very prominent and successful military leader.

Ambrose Powell Hill was one of the most highly regarded generals in the civil war. He commanded a division under Stonewall and was known as the saviour at Sharpsburg (Antietam) when his prompt arrival from Harpers Ferry saved the day for the south. On Stonewall's death at Chancellorsville in May 1863, R.E. Lee reorganised his army into three Corps from the previous two, and gave the new Third Corps to A.P. Hill. It was his corps that began the fighting at Gettysburg two months later. Despite that, he continued to serve with distinction as Third Corps commander until, just 7-days before Appomattox, he was killed at Petersburg.

He was such an able and trustworthy subordinate to both Jackson and Lee that it's not surprising that they both referred to him in their last confused hours.
