Position:Home>History> Why can't archaeologists lift the Titanic so they won't have to get robo

Question:It is in such poor condition that it would fall to pieces, plus it is 2 miles down, and they tried to lift a huge piece once, but the weight and the ocean's movements made it impossible. The Titanic should stay where it is......it is a gravesite, people died in that spot.

It'd take a sh*tload of archeologists, and they'd all better be able to hold their breath a loooong time!

one of the major reasons they cant raise the Titanic or any ship that has been under the ocean is because as soon as the metal is oxygenized it would turn in to a very big rusty mess and fall apart

We should get lawyers and politicians to do it. I for one would be glad to send them to the bottom of the ocean :-)

They have a bit of a problem because there is a bit of water on top of the Titanic today.

They can't lift the Titanic because they want the remains to rest in peace at the bottom of the ocean as a memorial for the lives that were lost.

One reason is that desecration of a grave site is rightly reviled, repugnant behavior. Titantic is a grave site the absence of visible human remains notwithstanding. Ship wrecks of naval vessels, for one, are internationally recognized protected sites; they are graves.

English-speaking countries all have maritime preservation laws to safeguard historic ship wrecks. Maritime law concerning salvage aside, there is nothing worth the expense or futile effort to disturb the wreck.
