There were 7 main reasons for Australia's involvement in the Vietnam war, they were;

1. Fear of the Domino Theory - that if one country fell to communism (believed in dictatorship, no rights) than the rest would fall like a pack of domino's

2. Containment - We wanted to control communism and disallow it to spread any further

3. Forward Defence - We wanted to attack communism where it was at so it couldn't spread anymore (similar to containment)

4. Fear of Indonesia - It was feared that communism had already spread to Indonesia and Australia was next

5. SEATO 1954 (South East Asian Treaty Organisation) and the ANZUS treaty 1951 (Australia, New Zealand, United States) to have mutual defence.

6. PM Robert Menzies anti communism policy - Menzies was against communism and tried to ban the communist party

7. Supporting allies - Australia wanted to support their allies (in this case US) so if we ever needed them they were there

The main reason for the war was to stop the spread of communism. There are many other views on this subject so I would suggest reading some books on the subject.

The United States feared that Vietnam would be taken over by communists, so they sent troops there.

The primary cause of the Vietnam War was the invasion of the French shortly after World War II. By occupying the country, the French created an imbalance in the cultural lifestyle of the Vietnamese. This disruption of the peaceful Vietnamese life was taken advantage of by the communists, who at that time where seeking to spread their political views on small, weak, countries that were unbalanced by the French.

The North of vietnam was Communist. They tried to invade South vietnam to gain control over the government and turn the country Communist (Many other contries like France also tried to do this).

Australia's Involvement:
To sum it up: France wanted to make Vietnam a communist country and Australia was afraid it also would be affected by this. This is because Australia is very close to Vietnam. Australia thought that if Vietnam fell under Communisim, they too would (domino theory). So Australia asked America and others to help fight and stop Vietnam becoming a communist country. Australia was also involved in the war.

For starters, beginning in 1955, Australia was, and is, a SEATO member, so its participation was generally assumed by the United States early on in the Vietnam conflict. The U.S. did not succeed in making the Vietnam conflict a formal SEATO mission, but the Australian government made fighting Communism in Southeast Asia, alongside the United States, a core element of Australian foreign policy, in order to keep good relations with the U.S., who has traditionally supplied Australia with advanced arms, and a "nuclear umbrella" against Chinese aggression, since the end of the Second World War.
