October 12th Passchendaele, The first World War?

Question:Could somebody please give me some information on what was the cause of the battle of Passchendaele?
I know they'd been previousl fighting in Belgium but I need to know why..
Was it the Germans trying to take over the world kinda thing, or what?

Also, I am writing about the Battle At Passchendaele October the 12th, New Zealand's soldiers'darkest day'

Passchendaele is in Belgium. It was called the 3rd battle of Ypres because the Germans needed to break the Ypres salient and the British wished to break out of it.

No, the Germans just wanted to be a great power like Britain but the cause of World War I was alliance obligations and more trouble in the Balkans
