Sometimes you see Missouri spelled Missovri on old documents. Why is this?

Question:I know that old and middle english used v's in place of u's. I'm not sure about the case with Missouri. It may have still been remnant of Middle English or illiterate country boys writing about it. Hard to tell.

the u was written like a v
they pretty much look the same
