If you are talking about the Knights Templar; then their personal wealth and power. They became more powerful than most of the monarchs in Europe. Arguably, they were the first"multi-national corporation". They owned vast tracts of land in Europe and had their own banking system.

Also, they only had to answer to God or the Pope; and considering those two people were rarely present, they did what they pleased.

That would have to be the Templars themselves. The Templars were made up mostly of the common people, people that couldn't read and lived hand-to-mouth on a daily basis. The allure of the Templars inspired them that they could have more then what they had and many joined.

Not all of the Templar were bad, just as not all of them were good. They were as diverse as any group of people. They did a lot of good and a lot of bad.

A good example of Templars doing bad was portrayed (very well, I might add) in the fictional (but based on real events) movie Kingdom of Heaven.
